Spalding’s Business of Writing Seminars are virtual curriculum offerings for current students of the Naslund-Mann School, but alumni can participate in two ways. For a nominal fee, alumni can attend the full-day seminars, which focus on professional writing, editing, and publishing. Topics run the gamut: for instance, our inaugural seminars in September 2022 covered
- writing an effective query letter and synopsis, with Julia Watts (’05)
- crafting a creative nonfiction book proposal, with Elizabeth Felicetti (’20)
- landing freelance writing assignments for university publications, with Michael Malone (’10)
- pitching, landing, and preparing for interviews with media outlets, with Jill Cox-Cordova (’17)
The March 2023 seminars are
- submitting work for publication in literary journals, with Kelly Martineau (’10)
- Calling all creative writers: the commercial world needs you! With Holly
Jensen (’10) - Creating an artist portfolio: everything you need to apply for grants, fellowships, and more, with Amina McIntyre (’09)
- Using your writing skills to get grants, with Melissa Hamilton (’18)
