Take part in the entire fall residency when you join other alums and upper-level students for “Writing with Scissors: The Collage Essay,” with Dianne Aprile. Alums who sign up for this workshop attend the residency just as any student and have access to all the same events, including arts excursions and meals. The cost for this full-residency workshop is $1,755 and includes a double room at the Brown Hotel for nine nights (November 15-24). Additional nights are available for $110 per night. A single-room upgrade is available for an additional $200.

Writing with Scissors: The Collage Essay

led by Dianne Aprile

Open to alums and upper-level MFA students in any area

Focal area: creative nonfiction

Format: generative workshop

Worksheet: none

Bring your memories, observations and obsessions to this workshop, and watch them coalesce into the exciting and challenging form of collage essay. The Los Angeles Times Review of Books describes the collage essay and its big sister, the collage memoir, as “not telling so much, as layering a story . . . a consciousness, shaped by memories (and) associations.”  A spin-off of the lyric essay, the form is defined by David Shields this way: “Tiny paragraph-units working together to project a linear motion.” The use of white space combined with these brief chunks of contrasting text (poetry, dreams, dialogue, borrowed forms, etc.) encourages the writer to go deep and the reader to be an active participant in the process.

In this generative workshop, we will write brief units of text from themed prompts, then stitch them together with white space, weaving connections and meaning out of the resulting collage. We will experiment with paper collage, too. Materials provided.

Alums interested in Dianne’s special-topic workshop must register by August 15 by emailing schoolofwriting@spalding.edu. In the subject line, include your name and “Collage.”

We’ll notify participants of a place in the workshop by August 20 and include information about making payment. Full payment is due October 15.
